Kyoto Ink Brush Pen

The Kyoto Ink Brush Pen draws its inspiration from the refined artistic culture of Kyoto — Japan’s ancient capital and the heartland of classical Japanese calligraphy, poetry, and ink painting. The pen handle is turned from Kyoto paulownia wood (kiri), a lightweight, fine-grained timber traditionally used for the most precious Japanese objects, including musical instruments and lacquerware boxes. The fine-tipped nylon brush is modeled on the brushes used by Kyoto court calligraphers, offering a consistent, fine point for detailed character work and an excellent splay for bold horizontal strokes. The ink delivery system uses a sponge reservoir that can be filled by dipping or via the screw-off reservoir cap for use with bottled liquid inks. The Kyoto Ink Brush Pen performs perfectly for hiragana, katakana, and kanji calligraphy, as well as for sumi-e ink wash painting. It also produces beautiful results with Western Italic calligraphy when loaded with iron gall or colored ink. Each pen is presented in a handmade paper box (washi) decorated with a traditional Kyoto yuzen pattern and includes a hand-lettered calligraphy poem print.
